At FW we love delving into the careers of scientists and the many diverse paths one can take based on our individual strengths and passions. Here Dr Chloe Lim, scientist, entrepreneur, and Founder and Director of Twisty Science, talks about finding your hidden talent to unlock your potential. You can also watch Chloe’s TEDxCanberra talk here.

You may have heard experts say to focus on your strengths. But what if we have strengths we don’t know we have until we try something new.
I’m a molecular biologist who worked in medical research for over 14 years before moving into government. But I am also a professional balloon artist!
What started as volunteering for a church community event nearly 6 years ago turned into a weekend side hustle twisting balloons at parties, even appearing on Channel 7’s reality TV show Blow Up.
When I first started as a balloon artist, I was a complete beginner, in both balloon art and entrepreneurship. Even though I felt unsure, one thing I have learned about trying new things is that you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. It can be scary to try something new and different, but holding yourself back may stop the potential growth that comes from challenges and failures.
It was my love for bringing joy to people with balloons that compelled me to push past fear and discomfort, and develop this talent through effort and learning with a growth mindset.
What’s truly incredible is that by trying something new, I’ve unlocked various opportunities that led me to discover my true purpose: helping people think scientifically by making learning fun using balloon art and science.
Here are three tips to uncover your hidden talent:
First, do something different! Step out of your comfort zone and try something completely new. Whether it’s glassblowing, jujitsu or an improv class, exploring new hobbies can unveil skills you never knew you had. You might discover a hidden passion for something completely unexpected!
Next, embrace mistakes. When you dive into a new interest, mistakes are part of the journey. Remember, every expert was once a beginner! Commit to refining your talent, and before you know it, you’ll be on the path to mastery.
Finally, seek out a supportive community. Connect with others who share your interests. Instead of comparing yourself to others, learn from those who excel in your area of interest. Surrounding yourself with the right people will not only inspire you but also help you grow and develop your newfound talent.
Are you ready to discover your hidden talents and unleash your true potential?
Do something different. Try something new. Get uncomfortable.
You never know what passions and gifts you will discover, and the courage to step out and challenge yourself may change your life forever.
