Did you know that there is a serious gender bias on Wikipedia, one of the world’s most-visited websites? In fact, just under 20% of the people profiled on Wikipedia are women, and gender diverse people are similarly under-represented. This means that many talented individuals (and their work) are not getting the recognition they deserve – including women working in scientific disciplines. This critically skews perceptions about the contributions that women make to society.

So, to celebrate the birthday of our namesake Rosalind Franklin, we are hosting two Wikipedia Edit-a-thons in Sydney and Canberra, where you can learn how to edit Wikipedia and boost the profiles for #WomenInSTEMM. You don’t need any Wikipedia editing experience to take part!

On the day, we’ll kick off with a tutorial, followed by some writing time. There will be some experienced Wikipedians available to help you every step of the way and we’ll also provide a list of amazing women who don’t yet have a Wikipedia page (if you know one, you can nominate them here or during registration). We’ll then wrap up with some celebratory drinks, canapes and networking.

Our last two Edit-a-thons resulted in 51 new pages and over 100K words added for women in our sector – you can see the buzz here. So join us this year to ramp up this impact and make visible the women who have made important contributions to the health and medical research ecosystem.

This is a free event, but places are limited so please register below if you’re keen. Together, we can make the internet just that little bit better while making new friends and learning new skills.
