Earlier this month we hosted our second Members Connect Virtual meetup. These events offer FW members an opportunity to connect, strengthen professional networks and share experiences. This edition was all about navigating the early stages of your career, and here are the main take aways from our guest Prof Francine Marques.
For our second Members Connect Virtual meetup we were joined by heart health researcher and all-round inspirational leader Professor Francine Marques, who frankly and fearlessly shared her story.
Fran took us behind “the Instagram of science” highlight reel of her achievements (of which there are many!) and shared the various personal and professional challenges she faced throughout her early career and how they influenced her professional mission and shaped who she is today.
These are the top tips Fran wishes she knew earlier and wants to share with others:
#1 Surround yourself with a diverse team of mentors
There will be times when you feel like quitting or when the imposter syndrome gets the better of you. There will be rejections to grant submissions, job applications and more. You won’t be able to predict or control the obstacles, but you can select the people to be in your corner as you navigate them. Mentors are valuable at every career stage.
#2 Choose wisely your supervisor and work environment
We spend so much of our life at work. Don’t just choose a workplace that looks impressive on paper, choose a workplace that has a culture that aligns with your values and employs people you want to spend time with. Check out Fran’s article on transforming the culture of medical research here.
#3 Ask for what you need
Get clear on what you need in place to help you thrive. Whether it’s flexible working, specific training or additional equipment. Figure out what you need and ask for it. Even if your request isn’t actioned, you will have opened an important conversation with your supervisor or manager.
#4 Future proof your skills
Once you’re through your PhD and moving into new roles, you will likely need new skills like supervision or managing people; science communication; grant writing; budget and finance management. Identify the skills that you may need for your next position. Don’t wait until you need these skills before you try to learn them.
Fran also shared a few of her fave quotes, one being “You can have it all, just not at the same time” (Michelle Obama). A powerful reminder for women with carer responsibilities that it is okay to say no and focus on the things that matter the most to you, and these will shift during your career.
The next Members Connect Virtual Meetup is on 3 Dec, register to join us here.
